It is believed that the bascinet evolved from a simple iron skullcap, known as the cervelliere, which was worn with a mail coif, as either the sole form of head protection or beneath a great helm.
Later the bascinet was a form of head protection used in Europe between 1370 and 1430. It can be recognised by its "muzzle", which protected the face with a sharp tip.
Its characteristic "" dog's snout "", hence the name "Hundsgugel". Hand forged from two halves of 2mm steel, then welded and polished.
