Bartmann Pitcher. Popluar in Europe during 16th and 17th centuries, Bartmann jugs and pitchers were a popular glazed stoneware product used for storage of food or drink, decanting wine and transporting goods. Crafted in various size jugs, bottles & pitchers the signature decorative detail was a bearded face mask (Bartmann, German). The depiction of the bearded face is believed to have originated from 14th century folklore of the mythical wild man. Bartmann jugs have been recovered from archeological sites around the globe, and are frequently recovered from shipwrecks including the British warship, Mary Rose.
